We’re running a special letter‑writing event at Southlands in support of From Me to You, the charity founded by Alison Hitchcock and Brian Greenley. When Brian was diagnosed with cancer, Alison began writing him letters, simple, steady, handwritten notes that became a lifeline. Their friendship, built entirely through the post, grew into a nationwide movement encouraging people to write to those living with cancer, easing loneliness one envelope at a time.
As part of our ongoing run of bookish, writing‑centred events for LitOct 2026, this workshop invites you to slow down and rediscover the pleasure of putting pen to paper.
There’s a quiet kind of joy in receiving a letter through the post, the soft thud on the doormat, the handwritten name, the sense that someone paused their day long enough to think of you. At this workshop, we’ll be creating that feeling for people currently living with cancer.
This is communication at its most human: writing to someone you don’t know, not for thanks or recognition, but simply because a stranger might need a moment of warmth. It’s a small, generous act. And it matters.
