The Art in Everyday Things

About this Event

Sketching and Painting Workshop Led by Lisa Tompkins

Discover the quiet beauty in the everyday and learn how to turn ordinary objects into expressive still-life art.

Inspired by Brighton-based artist Sally Smith, whose paintings honour the stories and memories held in simple things, this gentle workshop invites you to look closely, notice more, and sketch what matters to you.

We’ll start with a short presentation and conversation about Sally Smith’s approach: finding meaning in familiar objects and capturing memories through still life.
Then you’ll explore and create, focusing on:
•    Noticing beauty in the simple and familiar
•    Playing with colour, shape, and arrangement
•    Sketching from life using objects that matter to you
•    Beginning a small “still life book of memories” celebrating everyday things you love

You’re encouraged to bring a meaningful item, nothing fancy, just something familiar: a mug, a trinket, a flower, a piece of jewellery, or anything with a story.

Art often lives in the things we handle every day:
–    the pattern on a cup
–    the curve of a bowl
–    the colours of home
–    the objects we keep for reasons we can’t always explain

By looking closely and sketching freely, you’ll learn to appreciate these quiet moments and capture your own memories in a personal, creative way.

The beauty is already there; we simply learn to notice it.
