As part of LitOct 2026, our annual literary festival, Southlands Arts Centre is pleased to present a writing workshop with Diana Webb

The 17th century Japanese haiku poet Basho said ,’each day is a journey, the journey itself home.’ This two hour workshop will focus on 200 years of railway journeys, sharing mainstream poems on that theme and exploring how haibun can write in a different way about this way of travelling which is maybe better.

Diana Webb is an award winning haibun writer who has been this year’s judge for the British Haiku Society haibun awards. ‘the novelty of novello’ published this year by Alba publishing is her ninth collection of haibun available from her for £12 plus £2 postage. One testimonial says ‘her unique and intricate haibun never fail to impress’

Although Bea Ysolda’s background is in art and design, her dissertation research ignited a fierce passion for climate justice after a classmate writing about FIFA Packs told her, ‘Nobody cares about climate change.’ That conversation fuelled Bea’s fire to expose how mainstream climate communication is broken. We are forced to carry the emotional guilt of environmental breakdown through top-down corporate marketing, while the vast majority of resource destruction is driven by a handful of monopolies at the top. Moving beyond individual blame, this talk pulls back the curtain on the hidden intersection of AI and climate change. How does the rise of artificial intelligence actively accelerate environmental collapse, and how does this new era of techno-feudalism affect you?

Participants are invited to bring along a small object of personal significance – something ordinary, sentimental, forgotten, or quietly meaningful. Through guided prompts, shared reading, and supported writing time, the workshop explores how everyday objects can unlock memory, emotion, and story, and how small moments often carry the biggest feelings.

There’s no pressure to share and no expectation of prior writing experience. Jaspreet creates a warm, supportive space that encourages curiosity, reflection, and connection through words.

Ideal for first-time writers, returning poets, and anyone curious about how poetry can grow from the details of everyday life.

Life rarely stands still. Whether you’ve changed jobs, retired, moved home, welcomed a new baby, experienced bereavement, watched children leave the nest, or are navigating any other major shift, transitions can stir up complex emotions.

This gentle, supportive workshop with Jo Eastop offers space to explore those feelings through short, accessible writing activities designed to promote wellbeing. No writing experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to pause and reflect.

Research by Pennebaker & Evans suggests that ‘writing seems beneficial when you are trying to make sense of an event you don’t yet understand.’

Through guided exercises, you’ll discover how writing about emotional experiences can help you process change and find clarity.

Talk by Heikie Hill
Every maker has a moment when something quietly catches fire — a spark that turns curiosity into a calling. From a Spark to a Flame is the story of how silversmithing did exactly that for Heikie. It’s not a lesson, not a workshop, not a technical deep dive. It’s simply the tale of how she found herself, somewhat unexpectedly, hammer in hand, metal on the bench, wondering how this craft had woven itself into her life.
In this witty talk she’ll share the people who shaped her journey, the teachers who nudged her forward, the moments that mattered, and the point at which she realised she needed her own bench. There’ll be silver, copper and brass on show, along with the well worn tools and traditional techniques she uses at her bench. You’ll also get a peek at some of her bespoke designs, the pieces that grew out of odd moments of inspiration, and a chance to buy one if something catches your eye.

This event is part of LitOct 2026.

The ticket price includes a glass of wine or a soft drink
