Men Explain Things To Me. Rebecca Solnit’s famous essay read by Stacey, Southlands Volunteer.
Rebecca Solnit is an American writer and activist. She has written on a variety of
subjects, including feminism, the environment, politics, place, and art. In April 2008
she wrote what is possibly her most famous essay Men Explain Things To Me. As
she notes it is more reposted than any of her work. She kindly agreed for us to use it
for this event.
This essay is about gender inequality and the silencing of women’s voices in
various aspects of society. Solnit focuses on the idea that men
seemingly believe that no matter what a woman says, a man always knows better. If
you’ve ever been shushed or spoken over by a man, or if you haven’t, you might like
this reading.
A glass of wine is included in the price of your ticket. This event is part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, so you must be a woman to join us.
